Online Games

Now we see thousands of people playing online games such as tetris, ping pong, mario bros, super mario etc for free but despite its history dating back to 1970s, for most people online gaming began with the explosion of Internet in 1993 and with the advent of Doom and Warcraft sometime in 1994 or 1995. This got further boost with publishers starting to add Internet connectivity to computer games in 1994-95.

The media, in fact, have themselves been ignorant about online games history. As far as they are concerned, online gaming just coincidentally happened when their advertisers started producing Internet-capable games. But it isn’t so…

Early Years of development

In early 1950’s a college student created a game much like Tic-Tac-Toe for a class project to be played on dinosaur computers of those days complete with cathode ray tubes for the screen display. The 1960’s had MIT students programming a game called “Space war” that could be played with two people over a primitive network. The late 1960’s brought the first “real” video games like table tennis and shooter games.

The 70s – the game begins

Serious online gaming began with the first interactive online game called ADVENT. In fact networked gaming got conceptualized with ADVENT. Networked gaming had users playing against each other within an online fantasy world. The first networked game was called Mazewar, a game which involved networked players traveling through a maze and attempting to kill one another.

Next came the interpersonal interaction in a multi-player environment. The first such game was called DUNGEN. DUNGEN had players competing against one another to complete a series of quests. DUNGEN provided with new settings and players each time the user logged on.

The late 1970’s saw the start of video game craze with more and more households getting computer savvy. As a natural corollary, people started writing their own games for the home computers. These programming hobbyists traded and sold these home-grown games in local markets.

Other changes in the 1970’s were home gaming consoles which used game cartridges. That meant the people could collect games cartridges for one base unit instead of having bulky game console systems.

The 80s – some pause before the storm

1980’s saw growing craze for the video and computer game craze, but online gaming wasn’t on the horizon yet. New games with better sound and graphics were introduced and gained popularity. Pole Position and Pac-man were two that achieved big popularity. It was during 1980’s when Nintendo introduced its first gaming system.

The 90s – revolution begins

The 1990’s saw the phenomenal growth in both popularity and technology mostly because of the rise of 3-D and multimedia.

Myst, the intellectual adventure game introduced gaming on the CD-ROM format. Fancier 3-D graphics hardware made FPS (first person shooter) games such as Quake possible.

The late 1990’s saw the exponential growth of the Internet, MUDs (multi-user dungeons) which made online games wildly popular. New and improved graphical interfaces had people all over the world playing against each other not only in FPS games but also in real time strategy games (RTS games) as well as third person games like Grand Theft Auto.

This was also the period when websites started offering online games such as tetris, ping pong, mario bros, super Mario, and other free online flash games and non-flash based games free for playing after registering with them. This really pushed online gaming into the popular psyche.

The 21st Century – world is just a playground

Early years of the 21st century were dominated by the DVD-CD-ROM. It has changed the way online games are played. The latest gaming systems such as Sony’s play station and Microsoft’s X-box have networking capabilities to enable people play with each other in real time from all over the world. Exponentially growing broadband internet services have made playing these online games possible in true sense of the word.

The only drawback to the constantly evolving technology for online games is that what you buy today might become obsolete by the next year. Luckily, for the serious gamers, the resale industry for these online games is huge. This resale industry is just another element to the ever-changing history of online game.

Why GTA 5 Is The Perfect Birthday Gift

By now you’ve probably heard the media storm surrounding the release of video game Grand Theft Auto 5. You might not be a gamer, and you might not get why so many teens and fully fledged grown-ups are spending hours a day sitting starring at the TV, killing people or stealing cars or something. It sounds quite horrific. But you don’t need to get it – what you do need to do is buy your friend or relative the game for their Birthday if they haven’t already bought it!

So what’s so special about GTA 5?

If you haven’t engaged with video games since the days of pong or Pac-Man, you probably don’t realise just how advanced these mini worlds in the TV have become. Grand Theft Auto isn’t so much a game, as it is a virtual reality. The kind once only portrayed in Sci-Fi movies.

Yes it’s violent, but it is also an artistic masterpiece and a cutting edge piece of technology. Graphically it’s about as close to real life as you can get. Detail wise, it’s simply breathtaking.

Rockstar have established a ground-breaking franchise with Grand Theft Auto, which all started over 10 years ago. The games are recognised in the gaming industry, particularly GTA 3, for revolutionising the way we play games.

You see where games used to be limited to a set of rules within a predefined context, the makers of GTA are the pioneers of “open world” gameplay. Meaning they’ve designed whole cities from where the gameplay takes place, and the player can explore this vast detail freely without ever having to embark on the predefined story elements.

GTA 5 puts players in a very accurate rendition of LA, and from there it’s really up to them what they get up to. You can buy tattoos, smoke cannabis (hey it is legal in California with a doctor’s note), go to theme parks or the cinema, skydive, explore the countryside and mountains, hunt, buy houses and other items. The list is endless, however the most fun comes when breaking the law, stealing cars, and killing people. You can basically do anything you can in real life. And that’s the charm of it all.

Call it escapism, call it an aggression outlet without the consequences of real life – whatever it is it’s fun, and if you buy a cash strapped gamer a copy for their Birthday they might just love you as much as playing it!

GTA5’s Online Heists Update

The biggest updated is on the Grand Theft Auto V, set for release next week.

This is one of the reasons why there is a much anticipated online heist, and people logging into the site to see if it is already on the release. Many people have waited for this game since the company spread stared announcing it easier and many enthusiasts cannot wait to get the copy.

What can players expect?

There are different daily objectives that you need to know, and this shall offer the players a series of different challenges. You have the chance of completing the jobs, or get the free road for the in game cash. These are the objectives that you will need to do daily. Eventually, if you are successful you will get the reward. This will include the Rock star stacking challenges, and you can make more than $500000 for the challenges.

The activities

The free roam is bolstered with a collection of different activities, which include the single players games characters. There are contact players, who will destruct the police in order to keep the criminal colleagues safe. There are other new activities in the game and it includes Lamar giving directions to players to get rid of vehicles, and other team leaders asking assistance in destroying the planes that are in the air.

Modes of the game

There are three new modes of the game. The new PvP modes are very much inspired by the terminator 2, and you will see the striking resemblance. They include

• Come out to play
• Siege mentality
• Hasta la vista

Come out and play mode

In this mode, there are three runners, who want to make it home but there is a team of hunters on their tail. They need to run, in order to get to their destination, and avoid the shotguns and motorbikes of the hunters. The runners also have access to weapons to trample the bikers, and it is all about survival for the fittest

The siege mentality

In this mode, a collection of about four players will stand on their ground, and they are outnumbered but not out gunned. They fight to survive many attacks, and they are in a location, which has a defense mode, in the GTA style setting. The attackers have a collection of unlimited weapons, and the defenders have access to use all manner of weapons available.

The Hasta La Vista mode

In this section, the chance is on, and the Truckers are on the hunt for the Cyclists. The goal of the cyclist is to reach the final checking point without being run down, or crushed under the wheels of the pursing cars. The Truckers only use their vehicles to crash the cyclists, and the cyclists must focus on acceleration, and maneuverability to keep their bikes on the right path.

The Age of Free Online Gaming

The age of free online gaming is now upon us. It is remarkable how much progress has been made in the free online gaming market in the past five or so years. Earlier this decade when people heard “free game” horrible images of freeware games made by college kids in their spare time came to mind, games that looked like early 1980s PC RPG betas. No longer. Today there are literally dozens of free to play games in almost every genre. Maple Story alone, a free to play 2D MMORPG released in 2003, now boasts over 56 million accounts worldwide 1.

Just in case you’re wondering, that blows World of Warcraft with its 10 million users out of the water. While MMORPGs are the most common genre of free gaming, there are free games in every field. Shot Online and Albatross18 are both free golfing games with a level of depth rarely found in the retail golfing market. Games like GunZ: The Duel, Wolf Team, War Rock, and Soldier Front offer FPS experiences ranging from frag fests to tactical team coordinated matches. Its difficult to think of a genre that isn’t covered.

There are several excellent free racing games such as the simple yet realistic racer Project Torque. If you want something more immersing, look no further than the hybrid Racing/RPG game Drift City which has several fully explorable cities filled with side missions and places to explore with graphics similar to the retail Grand Theft Auto games. If you like to mix rocket launchers with your racers, the free market delivers; Upshift Strikeracer is all about rockets, mines, and other nasty weapons to blow the other players out of the race. Even traditional sports are covered. Freestyle Street Basketball is a simple yet addictive game where each match lasts five minutes, perfect for the casual player. If you’re a soccer fan than try Kicks Online.

I’ve mentioned only a fraction of the free to play games available and it almost feels like a crime to have left out such great games as Fly For Fun, Exteel, Gunbound, and the dozens of other games now accessible by anyone with an Internet connection. Now, dear reader, you must be convinced that we are now entering the age of free gaming, but I have one more shock for you. This is only the beginning. Even as I write this there are dozens of top quality games in beta testing either here in America or in Japan and Korea. Beautiful games like Neosteam and a Gundam MMO are in the works. The list of free online games available and under construction is in the hundreds. Many former pay to play games have been liberated from their monthly fees. Archlord, RF Online, Savage, Anarchy Online, and Shadow Bane are now available to the masses for free. Surely this is a trend that will continue.
